Alex Nowrasteh

Alex Nowrasteh currently holds the position of Vice President for Economic and Social Policy Studies at the Cato Institute. His work has been featured in prominent publications like the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and the Washington Post, among others. He is a frequent guest on television and radio programs, including Fox News, MSNBC, Bloomberg, and NPR.

In the academic realm, Nowrasteh’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the World Bank Economic Review, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Public Choice, Kyklos, and the Journal of Bioeconomics. He has also contributed chapters to various edited volumes.

Nowrasteh is the coauthor, alongside Benjamin Powell, of the book “Wretched Refuse? The Political Economy of Immigration and Institutions,” published by Cambridge University Press in 2020. This book, which explores how economic institutions adapt to immigration in receiving countries, received the “Best Book in Austrian Economics” award from the Society for the Development of Austrian Economics in 2022.

Originally from Southern California, Nowrasteh earned his BA in economics from George Mason University and his MS in economic history from the London School of Economics.
